How to Give Your Shop ‘Kerb Appeal’

We’re used to hearing the phrase ‘kerb appeal’ when it comes to selling houses; first impressions count, so it’s important to make sure your home is just as appealing from the outside as it is on the inside. But have you ever stopped to apply the same logic to your shop?

No matter how wonderful your products or how beautiful your interior shelving, if the exterior of your shop doesn’t look clean, attractive and welcoming, your customers might be put off coming in at all.

If you’re concerned that your shop hasn’t got ‘kerb appeal’, don’t worry. We’ve put together these top ten tips that should have that visitor bell ringing non-stop.

Treat your shop to a facial

While window displays and welcome signs are important, it’s a good idea to start with the basics. The facade of your shop is what customers will usually see first, so make sure your shop looks clean and professional. This means sorting out any crumbling building work, making sure paint is fresh, cleaning display windows, dusting displays and investing in a well-designed sign that shows your business at its best.

Perfect your brand

 Does your signage and display tell your customers exactly who you are and what you do? It sounds obvious, but lots of small businesses suffer from confused exterior branding that isn’t clear about the services or products on offer. If your shop has an ambiguous name, show your customers what you sell with a logo or a clear-cut window display.

Put on a good display

 Talking of displays, these are one of the most useful tools you have at your disposal for enticing customers in. Clever or beautiful shop displays will show off both your shop and your products to their best – not to mention giving you great fodder for sharing pictures (and encouraging customers to share pictures!) on social media. Give the customer what they want

Having a good knowledge of your USP should be your main inspiration when it comes to how to present the exterior of your shop. Find out what customers come to you for most and then make sure that’s well-represented in your signage or displays.

Be welcoming

Once upon a time, a closed door and frosted windows were considered high-end for small shops. Not any more! Try to make your shop as welcoming as possible, with open doors and big windows that tell people exactly what to expect. If possible, have staff members on hand to smile at or welcome customers as they enter.

Take it outside

Spilling out onto the street can be a great way to grab customers’ attention – as long as it’s not an issue with your local council! From flower displays by the front door to stalls displaying your wares, taking your shop onto the street will help make it impossible to ignore.

Appeal to their senses

Similarly, use your external marketing to hook customers by their other senses. If you sell food or other great-smelling produce, make sure the scent is wafting out of the shop as people pass by. Soft music or staff handing out food samples are sure-fire ways to entice ears and taste buds too.

Curate what they see

Getting customers into the shop is no good if the first thing they see is old retail shelving or dishevelled aisles that make them walk straight back out again. Make parking easy

One big turn-off for customers is a shop with difficult parking or a dirty car park. If you have a car park or parking space outside your shop, make sure it’s clean, clear and well-marked. If you don’t have parking right outside, make sure to put out a sign directing customers to the nearest parking, as well as making this clear on your website.

Think about your digital kerbs

It’s not just your physical shopfront that needs to lure in customers – your digital shopfront does too! From your social media presence to your website design, customers’ online experience of your brand could make all the difference in their decision to visit your shop or not, so make your site is as welcoming and easy to use as possible.
