Our Favourite Christmas Window Displays 2015

Ryan Willis

We love a good retail window display and we love Christmas, so when the two combine we’re in shop fitting heaven!

Harrods, Harvey Nichols and Selfridges launched their highly anticipated, world-famous Christmas windows last month, so we thought we’d take a closer look.

A Traditional Window Display

Harrods went for a traditional ‘Once Upon a Christmas’ display centred around a magical world of make-believe…

What you might not realise is these theatrical displays were put together by a secret troupe of festive mice led by Peter Pumpernickel and Poppy Peasprout. See what happens when the mischievous pair accidentally launch themselves into the heart of the display!

We particularly like the tiny sets beneath the floorboards (at children’s eye level) showing the charismatic creatures preparing for the big day.

A More Contemporary Window

In contrast, Harvey Nichols went for something altogether more contemporary - creating a glittery 70s disco party, complete with sequins (300,000 of them), 620 mirror balls and 540 baubles!

Flying in the face of tradition, these eye-catching, retro displays sparkle with fairy lights and LEDs, and certainly capture the mood and excess of the festive season.

Leaving Convention on the Shelf

Selfridges, on the other hand, decided to bypass Christmas completely with their stylish signs of the zodiac themed displays.

Set against an illuminated backdrop of outer space, these deceptively simple displays ooze style and elegance. They also inspire customers to visit their particular window and argue over which is best! Online customers can shop for gifts based on their star sign – if you’re into that kind of thing.

Another window features an impressive mechanical model of the solar system created by Special FX company Artem, working with the Greenwich Royal Observatory. Here’s a video showing how it was made…

The store’s facade also boasts a 9-metre light installation inspired by astronomical clocks, produced by creative studio Artisan.

Different By Design

We do love a traditional Christmas window display, but we’re really impressed by Selfridges and Harvey Nichols for avoiding the obvious clichés, and in doing so, setting themselves apart from the competition. It’s the same innovative, forward thinking approach we always look to bring to our own bespoke shop fitting designs.

We’d like to take this opportunity to wish all our customers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy & Prosperous New Year!
